PROF. SUHASINI GURURAJA

Associate Professor

Education

  • Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering), University of Washington, Seattle, USA

  • M.S. (Structural Engineering), University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA

  • B.Tech. (Civil Engineering), Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

Dr. Suhasini's research focuses on a major theme in the field of advanced composites that correlates the material microstructure with its performance. Material hierarchy, inhomogeneity, and anisotropy – inherent to advanced composites – make the development of accurate structure-property relations quite challenging. Additionally, effective preservation of optimal microstructures is needed during composite manufacturing, where even minor variations result in varied structure-property relations across the acreage of a structural component. Dr. Suhasini's research group – Advanced Materials and Processing Laboratory (AMPL) – explores issues at the intersection of composite microstructure, composite manufacturing, and structural integrity. She has achieved this through developing and leading intertwined research activities in the areas of damage development and progression, process modeling, and advanced manufacturing of composites.

Before joining academia, Dr. Suhasini worked at GE Global Research (Bangalore, India) and Boeing Commercial Airlines (Everett, WA, USA) as a Research Engineer and Structural Analyst for over 3 years. At Boeing, she worked on the 787 Airplane in Airframe test groups and was involved in the development of test and analysis methods for durability and damage tolerance of composite structures. At GE Global Research, Dr. Suhasini looked at developing novel concepts for composite processing for design optimization of GE wind blades.
